Becoming a Candidate Attorney with Allen & Overy is just the beginning of what will be a stimulating and rewarding legal career.

Throughout the two years of your Articles programme, we will work closely with you to ensure you have the right support to develop into a successful commercial lawyer.

One of the things graduates value most about being at Allen & Overy is the excellent award-winning training they receive. During your time with us on Articles, you will work for partners, counsels and associates who will provide you with support and guidance, and you will take an active and practical role in the office’s work, with plenty of individual responsibility along the way. We also offer an International Buddy Programme, where you will be paired with a trainee lawyer in one of A&O’s overseas offices supporting one another and working to grow your own international network at the firm.

As well as learning practical skills such as drafting, transaction management, research and legal and office procedures, the experience you gain as a Candidate Attorney will develop your professional conduct including negotiation and communication with clients and colleagues.

Our impressive in-house training covers a broad range of legal, personal and business skills to help you develop not just as a lawyer but also as a business person. Personal development is highly valued at Allen & Overy and we offer a wide range of formal and informal training, including the opportunity to travel to London for training in your second year of Articles.

Another advantage of training at Allen & Overy is the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s top lawyers.

Training does not stop on qualification. At key points during your associate career you will become eligible to attend the different stages of our bespoke global associate development programme, where you will be joined by colleagues from around the world. These sessions are run by internal and external experts, focusing on developing your strategic and commercial awareness and your ability to work effectively and with resilience. As you progress, the focus on managing client relationships, personal impact and building a practice increases.

Individual practice groups run a ‘university’ each year which focuses on specific technical skills and knowledge, to which all newly qualified associates are invited. Our practice groups also hold regular training sessions to look at updating your knowledge in the area in which you are working.

The partners and associates you work alongside will ensure you are given variety and responsibility in your work. You will be expected to use your initiative but always safe in the knowledge that you have a strong network of resources and support behind you.
